Here is an interesting article published by University of Michigan about viruses in peonies. We are seeing a lot of visual indications of virus recently. It seems to be more common.

Yes, virus is quite common. Here in Europe as well. I’ve sampled some of my plants for viruses and it is rather widespread, although often symptomless. Keeping fields healthy through sampling, destroying infected plants and so on will help somewhat but is expensive and never perfect. To really get healthy plants you’d have to propagate through tissue culture, always starting from virus free plants, but that as well is rather expensive and currently not very easy (unless for intersectionals and tree peonies).
