For some reason, in years past, this variety acquired a reputation for being not only one of the truest "flag red" peonies in existence, but a variety that was difficult to grow. Apparently there is some rational for it being considered difficult, as given it’s wonderful color, it should have been well known and widely grown by now. I can’t testify to it’s difficulty, other than years ago I saw a couple of nurseries that seemed to be having troubles getting it going. That being said, I know that Adelmans had a spectacular row of it growing in 2017, so apparently it is possible to grow quite nice plants of this thing, if one manages to get it’s momentum going to begin with. Very similar in color and appearance to the equally uncommon "Hellen Matthews", which Al Rogers once called "an improved Alexander Woollcott."
