Parentage: Paeonia ostii ‘Fengdan’ x Paeonia qiui. First year bloomed 2011; first propagated 2011. Early season bloom. Flower form SINGLE, up-facing, 1 per stem. Petals are light purple with a silky gloss; rounded and gently notched. Flower size 5–8 inches (13–20 cm). Carpels 5 on average, pale yellow, and moderately hairy. Stigmas have normal morphology, red purple. Pollen bearing stamens, filaments same color as stigmas but fading white just under the anthers. Sheath completely encloses carpels, same color as stigmas. Fragrance. Large black oval seeds range 1/3 to 7/16 of an inch in size (9-11 mm). Plant height 52 inches (132 cm) with upright growth habit. Leaflets green, finely edged with dark reddish-orange. Named for its early flowering, the name coming from an ancient poem two lines of which roughly translate to “good rains know the season / when spring is happening.”
