Tree Peony originates from Paeonia rockii hybrids with unknown parentage. First bloomed before 1995. Fresh purplish red, SEMI-DOUBLE (lotus to chrysanthemum form under the Chinese system), upright and large size flower, with large, brown, nearly orbicular or elliptical flares, through to the back of the petals with a radiating edge. Obvious white rib on the back middle of the petal base. A few anthers hiding among the petals, having purple filaments, or stamens degenerated completely with only a few relic of filaments. Five normal carpels, half-enveloped by a dark purple sheath, having purple stigmas. Pollen scarce, but plant is fertile. Larger round leaves composed of 19 ovate to broadly ovate leaflets, deep green, thicker in texture. Upright and very vigorous plant with longer annual twigs, free-blooming with light fragrance. Mid-late season of bloom. Mature height to 2 m (6½ feet). The plant is very vigorous and greatly resistant to environment stress. It is being evaluated after being introduced the cold region like Ka-er-bin, Da-qing, northeast China, where it was found to be very hardy in winter. It is recommended to be grown for cut-flowers also. It is propagated by grafting in Ok peony nursery of Lanzhou. Breeder’s rights for this cultivar have been applied for in China.
