Seedling # IC-95-51R. Intersectional Hybrid (Herbaceous x Tree Peony). Seed Parent: ‘Martha W.’ (Lactiflora Gp). Pollen Parent: ‘Golden Era’ (Lutea Hybrid Gp). First bloomed 2002. Beautiful SEMI-DOUBLE (~30 petals) tree peony type flowers on herbaceous stems. Flowers are yellow flushed with pink and have very large dark red flares that are extremely prominent. Flowers appear quite orange when first open. Flower size is variable averaging at 6 inches though large ones up to 8” in diameter can be expected. Many large side buds (1-2 per stem) extend the blooming season for up to 2 ½ weeks. Center contains a dense ring of stamens and 4-5 carpels that are light green with dark pink stigmata. The sheath surrounding the carpels is partial, colored yellow. Flowers are displayed on upright to slightly arching stems just above and beyond the foliage making this an excellent landscape variety. Plant is very hardy with stems entirely from below ground overwintering buds. Height: 30-32 inches. Excellent dark green foliage which lasts well into autumn. Mild but pleasant fragrance. Patented under name ‘Smith Opus 1’ (US PP22, 192 P2). Propagated and distributed under Trademark name MISAKA.
