No seedling number. Records kept under garden name “Chow’s Yellow” and ‘G’Day Mate’. Parentage lost. Grown from seed sent to Bill from Bernard Chow of Melbourne, Australia in the early 1990’s. Bill had sent seeds to Bernard Chow many years ago, and plants grown from those seeds were in turn used in Chow’s hybridizing work. ‘G’Day Mate’ thus came from a foundation built by Bill and is an advanced generation lutea hybrid. First bloomed 2002, first propagated 2007. Flowers are SEMI-DOUBLE to SINGLE, 6-7 inches in size (15-17 cm), amber yellow suffused rose towards petals edges. Red flares extend about 20% of petal length. Typically one primary bud with one or two side buds. Cream colored sheath, light green carpels with cream-yellow stigmas. Pollen bearing stamens have light red filaments. Seeds. Upright growth habit, height to 4½ feet in Wisconsin (137 cm). Foliage light red on emergence from ground with some leaves retaining a purple flush before greening for the summer growing season. Mature foliage broad, deep blue-green. Plants may attain greater heights in climates that experience less severe winters. Many ground shoots are produced and plants make good subjects for division or grafting. Previous distribution as Chow’s Yellow and ‘G’Day Mate’. Named by Bill Seidl to reflect its Australian seed origin.
