SUFFRUTICOSA GROUP. No seedling number. Pod parent: unnamed Rockii seedling. Pollen Parent: unknown. First bloomed 1990. First year propagated 2002. SEMI-DOUBLE. Though the overall color effect is light pink, the flower petals are white with prominent black flares which extend to about 60% of the petal’s length. The edges of the flares bleed red, fading to pink, then white at the petal’s edge. Flowers are exceptionally large at 10 inches (25 cm) across, with one bloom per stem. Rounded petals are slightly ruffled and notched. Five to eight carpels, light green, sparsely hairy. Stigmas are cream white in color. Pollen bearing stamens are less than ½ inch long (15 mm), yellow throughout. Produces seeds. Narrow upright plant, to 6 feet (200 cm) in height. Foliage is green with purple cast giving bronzed effect. Blooms early midseason (13-15 days prior to ‘Red Charm’). Strong pleasing fragrance. Named for Katrin Huschen (wife of Carsten Burkhardt) and selected by her from over 200 seedlings raised by Hein Ebert and his son. The original stock plants were imported from the People’s Republic of China in the early 1950s, and from these, seedlings were raised and selected through successive generations over the last 50 or more years.
