Seedling always had the garden name Nachtigall. Parentage: Open pollinated seedling of ‘Obsidian’. First bloomed 2008. First propagated 2015. SINGLE with 2 rows of petals. One to two flowers per stem, 12 cm (4-5″) in size. Very dark red petals, cupped (RHS 187A). Carpels pale green on opening, darken to red post flowering, smooth, 3-5 in number. Stigmas white, normal anatomy. Pollen-bearing stamens, filaments red at base, yellow at the tips. Fragrance. Late season bloom. Foliage dark red on emergence from ground, becomes glossy metallic dark red, after flowering turns green. Stems remain red. Upright self-supporting growth habit to 70 cm (28″). In originator’s garden ‘Nachtigall’ seems to be a better and more vigorous grower than ‘Obsidian’. Its height is lower than ‘Obsidian’ and it has more stamens and filaments. It has been propagated at Giessler Nursery, Gross-Rosenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, for planned distribution.
